Who the Health Cares?
So, before we left Japan we purchased health insurance-knowing that we were going to try to have a baby (our company is small enough that it doesn't really have health insurance just yet).
The stipulation, of course, is that in order to have the insurance cover the baby, we must have had the insurance for a month before we conceive.
We did that, paying our first payment in March, we didn't conceive until May.
Now we are in the doctors office for our first visit. It turns out that the insurance has a $5000 deductable and it only pays 50% after that...
Having a baby (Provided everything is normal) in this area, costs about $10,000.
So, by the time we have our baby, we will have had our insurance -which we pay $315 a month- for 11 months, totalling $3,465. They will pay $2,500 to help us through our delivery.
Hmm...
One could argue that I'm paying that extra $900 for protection against something going wrong, but this also presumes that the insurance company doesn't decide that Post Natal is a seperate charge and thus we are back to the beginning with the initial $5000 deductable...
At this point, I'll take Canadian, British or Japanese health care... It costs me money to have insurance... Insurance is making the situation (Which is already incredibly expensive) MORE expensive...

An option that you have (which Rich and I do even though our health insurance is all paid for) is to deposit a certain amount of money into a savings account every month. You are not allowed to touch that money except for medical expenses. Few people are disciplined enough to do and a lot of people will often "cheat" and take the money out for emergency situations. However, if you can resist those two temptations, you can accumulate quite a bit of money very quickly and there isn't any insurance company that can tell you how to spend it.
