Now there's a thought...

So... I am hearing people talk a little about the whole North Korea thing, and what the U.S. is likely to do about it (We are all very much in the nuclear cross-hairs here... and this is the only country that actually has experience being nuked).

An interesting thing was said by a quiet little Japanese lady,

"The whole world should vote for America's president."

I really had to think about that one...

I still am...

OK, I've been reading but trying to stifle any comments. This comment by the lady though hits something close to home. It always amazes me how so many Americans don't understand
the importance of our President to the rest of the world. I know and support our right to dissent. Sometimes though I just cannot understand why every night on tv and almost every editorial written is constantly bashing our president. So they don't like him,
so they want him out so they can be in power themselves, ok...but do they not consider that the rest of the world is listening and sees their motives. Unfortunately I am getting to the point of questioning their Patriotism. Maybe Jefferson was right. Maybe we should have had just one party.

I love a good political discussion :)

So, Tio Pat, Maia, have at it! :D

In this instance, though, the lady in question was referring to whether the US would invade North Korea and leave Japan to be nuked in the process... It's not unprecidented, because, as you indicated, the stories that get over here seem to be very much "America invades countries for it's own purposes regradless of what any other country wants." The Iraq war didn't help the situation and it's been compounded because Bush retreated from this country's Kyoto accords for better environment. It's just been a bad couple of years for Bush's spin machine outside the US.

I'm not endorsing either side on this issue, but I have not yet met a "conservative" here in Japan... everyone -without exception- whom I have talked politics to thinks America invaded Iraq for it's oil...

I think the Conservatives are losing the spin war in a big hurry...

I don't know yet whose side I'm on (Conservative, Liberal), but I do know that I can safely say to Dad: "I told you so" as my only complaint was that we went to war without the complete world endorsement, and this is the result of that action: The world seems to see us now as bullies. It doesn't matter what the justification is for Iraq if North Korea nukes Japan to prove that they have a bigger penis than America... we will still be nuked.

that's sorta the point she was making, I think...

I believe in freedom of speech also, but let us not hide behind the first and use it as an excuse for unpatriotic behavior. If you have a child in your class that stands and berates another student for no apparent reason other than to get a laugh or make themselves look better you would I'm sure support their right to speak. But then you would not let it continue. I'm sure you would teach them to show respect for others and explain the responsibility that they have for their words. So why is it that we do not expect this behavior from adults? Does freedom of speech excuse us from any type of moral standard or responsibility?
P.S. Their is nothing wrong with being a Liberal, just go ahead and admit it Guy, your father and I love you anyway.

Tio, I'm not sure Maia knows to look down here anymore, I'll alert her that you posted, though! :D

As for being a Liberal, I think compared to dad I'm a serious Liberal... but compared to Joice (My friends mother), I am a major Conservative :).

As dad says: everything is relative... and where you and he are concerned, you are my relatives, too! :D Ahem... anyway, That's where my assessment that I'm a Moderate lies, I'm Liberal to the Conservatives, and Conservative to the Liberals... which must mean I'm Moderate.. :)

As for the Press; I agree with your statement that this behavior should be corrected, the question is; is what they are saying accurate? If so, the government needs some sort of check to keep balance. Unfortunately, the Patriot Act and many other things can (I'm not saying it is, just that it is possible), make the US into a police state with very little notice. It's okay as long as Bush is on the level (I'll leave that up to you folks to decide :) ), but if he's not, fear may lead this country into a very bad location... The Media is the only check we have against that... that's why freedom of press is so critical...

That said; I think our current media is a bunch of idiots... Important idiots, but idiots nonetheless...
